Four Reasons to Join a Teen Therapy Group

Why should your teen join a therapy group

There are so many benefits to being in group therapy. Here are four reasons why group therapy can be so helpful to teens:

  • Meet others who have similar struggles. Life can feel so isolating sometimes! Meeting other teens who have similar struggles to you can help you feel less alone with what you’re going through and can give you tremendous amounts of support and advice on how they navigate their struggles.

  • Practice putting your feelings into words. One of the biggest tasks in group therapy is to ‘put your feelings into words, not actions’. This is a skill that takes tremendous amounts of practice and something that can transform how you interact with the world once you start doing this regularly. Group therapy is the perfect place to practice this in a safe and supportive environment.

  • Learn more about what triggers you in friendships and relationships. When you meet people who trigger you, it can cause you to have all sorts of uncomfortable and confusing feelings. When you meet people in group who trigger you, those feelings will come up and you will then be able to process them and understand your triggers better and be able to better cope with them outside of group.

  • Get support from others who get it. So often we hear from our individual clients that none of their friends ‘get what they’re going through’. In a group of like-minded teens, you will meet other people who truly get the complex and nuanced experiences you are having.
