7 Effective Ways to Improve Body Image in Time for Summer

With summer around the corner, many of us start to think more about our bodies and how we feel about them. With the temperatures rising, many of us start to feel more self-conscious and exposed (especially when doing things like going to the beach or having a pool day). The desire to feel confident in our summer clothes is natural, but it's important to approach this with a healthy mindset. Keep reading for 7 effective ways to improve your body image and embrace summer fun with confidence and joy.

What is Body Image?

The term “body image” refers to the thoughts, feelings, and perceptions you have about your person and your comfortability within your own body. Someone with a healthy, positive body image is overall content with how they look and feels comfortable in their own skin; on the other hand, someone with poor, negative body image feels distressed about their appearance and likely struggles with low-self esteem. This is important because low self-esteem is directly related to our overall mental and physical health.

As a therapist who specializes in self-esteem and body image concerns, I am so excited to be leading a new Virtual Body Image Group for Teens. This group incorporates evidence-based practices for improving body image, embracing intuitive eating, and preventing the development of eating disorders in a safe, supportive environment (the summer session is starting soon, so schedule a call with me to reserve your spot!). If group isn’t for you, here are some effective things you can do on your own to start building a more positive body image:

7 Ways to Improve Your Body Image

  1. Practice Self-Compassion. Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding as you would a close friend. Instead of criticizing yourself for perceived flaws, acknowledge that everyone has imperfections. Practice positive affirmations and remind yourself that your worth is not determined by your appearance.

  2. Focus on Health, Not Size. Shift your focus from achieving a certain body size to being healthy and active. Engage in regular physical activity that you enjoy, whether it’s yoga, swimming, hiking, or dancing. Eating nutritious foods that make you feel energized rather than following restrictive diets can also improve your overall well-being.

  3. Clean Up Your Social Media Feed. Social media can have a significant impact on body image. Unfollow accounts that make you feel inadequate or promote unrealistic beauty standards. Instead, follow body-positive influencers who celebrate diversity and self-love. Surrounding yourself with positive messages can help shift your mindset towards body acceptance.

  4. Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Good. Summer fashion should be about comfort and confidence. Choose clothes that you feel comfortable in and that flatter your body shape. Don’t feel pressured to wear certain styles because they’re trendy; instead, find what makes you feel your best. When you’re comfortable, it shows in your confidence.

  5. Practice Mindfulness and Gratitude. Mindfulness can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Practice mindful eating by savoring your meals and paying attention to hunger and fullness cues. Additionally, keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the things you appreciate about your body and what it allows you to do.

  6. Surround Yourself with Positive People. Spend time with people who uplift and support you. Positive social interactions can improve your mood and self-esteem. Avoid those who engage in body-shaming or negative self-talk. Having a supportive network can reinforce your journey towards a healthier body image.

  7. Set Realistic Goals and Celebrate Progress. Set realistic and achievable goals for yourself. Whether it’s improving your fitness level, learning a new skill, or simply becoming more mindful, setting goals can give you a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and recognize your efforts.

Improving body image is a journey that requires patience and self-love. As summer approaches, focus on what makes you feel happy and confident. Remember that every body is a summer body, and embracing who you are is the most empowering step you can take. Enjoy the season with a positive mindset and a body-positive attitude!
